Sesto Quatrini debuts at Staatsoper Hamburg with
CARMEN

| 🇬🇧 On 24th September, Sesto Quatrini will take the podium for the first time at the Staatsoper Hamburg with Carmen, in the controversial 2022 production by Herbert Fritsch, described by Bachtrack as «a sumptuous theatrical experience». The Maestro, who takes on this opera after debuting it in 2019 at the Teatro del Maggio, stated just days before the premiere: «Carmen is a masterpiece, and conducting it is always an exciting challenge. One hundred and fifty years after its first performance, it is still explosive from every point of view.It would be verbose to sing its praise by listing its various components, not least because they are revealed with absolute force and clarity from the outset, and because rivers of ink have been shed in the analysis of this opera. What is more interesting – the Maestro continues – is to experience Carmen from the perspective of the audience who, it is equally clear, love it not only for its perfect theatrical mechanism and immortal music, but also and above all for the social and political significance that Carmen has always conveyed throughout its long theatrical history. The gitane without morals, whose mortal destiny hangs over her from her first appearance, makes us reflect on the concepts of freedom, violence and the right to choose one’s own destiny, however inevitable it might be. These are all themes that are still ceaselessly debated today, even in the most advanced democracies. It took the genius of Bizet, but also that of the writer of the original novella and the librettist, to give us such modern, perturbing, anti-conventional theatre, in which the music is the vehicle for everything, transporting, commenting, tinging in pastel colours, then unexpectedly tearing through the canvas. For all these reasons, my approach to Carmen will involve the constant search for chiaroscuro contrasts, counterposed with moments of pure, polished, gentle lyricism.» With four performances scheduled for 24 September and 2, 4, and 10 October. |
| 🇮🇹Il 24 settembre Sesto Quatrini sale per la prima volta sul podio della Staatsoper Hamburg con Carmen, nella controversa produzione del 2022 firmata da Herbert Fritsch e descritta da Bachtrack come «una sontuosa esperienza teatrale». Il Maestro affronta questo titolo dopo averlo debuttato nel 2019 al Teatro del Maggio e, alla vigilia della prima, ha dichiarato: «Carmen è un capolavoro e dirigerla è sempre una sfida eccitante. A centocinquant’anni dalla sua prima rappresentazione continua ad essere dirompente sotto tutti gli aspetti. Sarebbe pleonastico decantarne le qualità elencandone i vari elementi, anche perché queste emergono con assoluta forza ed evidenza sin da un primo ascolto e perché sono già stati versati fiumi di inchiostro sull’analisi di quest’opera. Più interessante è sentire Carmen – continua il Maestro – dalla parte del pubblico che, con altrettanta evidenza, la ama non solo per i perfetti meccanismi teatrali e per la musica immortale, ma anche e soprattutto per i significati sociali e politici che Carmen ha sempre veicolato durante la sua lunga vita teatrale. La gitana immorale sulla quale pende sin dalla sua prima sortita un destino mortale, ci fa meditare sul concetto di libertà, su quello della violenza e sul diritto di scegliere il proprio destino per quanto fatale esso posso essere. Tutti temi sui quali ancora oggi, anche nelle democrazie più compiute si continua a dibattere incessantemente. Ci voleva del genio – quello di Bizet ma anche di chi scrisse la novella originaria e di chi la ha trasformata in libretto – per restituire una drammaturgia così moderna, sconvolgente e anticonvenzionale nella quale la musica è il vettore di tutto, trasporta e commenta, colora di pastello e poi squarcia improvvisamente la tela. Per tutto questo, il mio approccio a Carmen sarà quello della ricerca incessante di chiaroscuri, di violente fiammate sinfoniche contrapposte a momenti di puro, levigato e dolcissimo lirismo».
